James & Sarah:

Sarah
was 18 & James 20 yrs. old when they were married. James was a shoemaker who lived in Steuben Co., NY until at least 1829 (Evidenced by James Harvey being born in NY in 1829). At some point, probably 1845, they migrated to Marion County, Iowa. If this date is accurate, they would have both been in their 60's when they made what must have been an arduous journey. No information on Sarah's parents/family. There was a Garrett VanHouten who had a daughter named Sarah in New Jersey - but records indicate she was born in March 1794. Perhaps a cousin? (The name "Garrett," though, appears many times in the descendents of James and Sarah.) James and Sarah are interred in the Bellefountaine Cemetery near Tracy, IA. (Marion County, Clay Township) |

| Sons Israel
and Hiram both served in the Union army out of Iowa during the Civil
War. Each also applied for army pensions, Hiram listing Ella L.
Randel as his wife and beneficiary. Hiram's first wife (Margaret Himes) didn't die until 20 years after Hiram married Ella Gibson, so they must have been divorced? |

| Lydia Randel (b. 1/21/1825, d. 1/30/1890) had dwarfism and lived, unmarried, with her parents for their entire lives. | |||||
| Lydia outlived
her father and mother by 23 & 29 years, respectively, so she must
have lived on her own for some portion of her life - or lived with other
friends or relatives. ***This just in: according to Dedee Dalebout (descendant of Sarah Marie Randel), Lydia lived with her sister Sarah in Ottumwa, IA until her death. I'd speculate she moved in with Sarah when her mother died? Lydia died in 1890 at the age of 65 and is buried with her parents in the Bellefountaine Cemetary in Tracy, IA. |

Rumor has it that a relative of Lydia's in Iowa has pictures of her. If this is true, I would love to be able to share them (and any others of the James & Sarah Randel line) in this forum! | ||||
